ABOUT THE OWNER
My name is Shimoné Louise Brookes. I am the proud founder and director of SL Personnel.
I’ve worked in the HR industry since 2011 and have gained extensive experience in a short space of time as I worked my way up from the deep end very early in my career.
I started out as an intern in my first post, but was quickly promoted to a managerial position, where I was the sole HR professional within the company. I eventually built up an entire HR department, which included the management of the company’s three branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
This was a great start to my year as I quickly gained practical experience in all areas of HR and Recruitment, which set a strong foundation for me as a young professional. I also learned how to work with people, and how to bring out the best of those around me.
However, looking back, this wasn’t my biggest personal triumph.
Seven years ago, I was medically diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder, but I refused to allow this diagnosis to limit my ambitions. With the necessary determination and perseverance, I was able to conquer all personal and professional challenges ahead of me. Being able to transform personal trauma into personal triumph contributed massively to my growth as a HR professional, and was one of the biggest reasons why I was motivated to start my own business.
After opening our doors in late 2019, SL Personnel has quickly become my core passion. HR is what I love to do, and I would like to make a positive change in the industry.
SHARING MY PASSION
My biggest goal is building a stronger relationship between the employer and employee in the workspace through my HR and Recruitment services.
Based on my experience, I realised that employers and employees are seldom aware of the South African Labour laws and acts associated with HR.
This leads to various negative and avoidable scenarios, including the misuse of employees by employers (sometimes done unintentionally) and the informal processes when it comes to disciplinary action and leave management, which could prove costly to the company. This is very common in the small- to medium-sized business sector.
I aim to add value by educating and empowering employers by structuring and establishing the correct HR procedures and contracts. This does not only ensure that the employer and company is protected, but ensures the employees are covered too.
This sets the grounds for positive relationships, which is proven to grow productivity for the company.
