Intro

Our client currently has a position available for a Teacher’s Assistant.

Job Requirements
A Non-Profit Organisation in the Strandfontein, Mitchell’s Plain area is in need of a Teacher’s Assistant. The successful person needs to understand the goals outlined in the Individualised educational development plan (IEDP).


Roles and Responsibilities
Weekly:
• Administering of medication must be done with consent by parents, and the Medication form must be completed and filed
• Complete Incident form if needed, and inform Management immediately
• It is your responsibility to ensure equipment is looked after, clean, and safe.
• If you notice that something is broken please report it to the task team.
Termly:
• Understand the goals outlined in the Individualised educational development plan (IEDP)
• Termly excursions: each assistant teacher together with the teacher is responsible for the children in their class, specifically their safety
• Be mindful of the termly theme
In the Classroom:
• Assist with the implementation of structured teaching (TEACCH method)
• Understand the outlined the Individualised educational development plan (IEDP).
• Help prepare the daily activities
• Support (prompting) of learners for discrete trials
• Provide various experiences & activities for children including songs, games and storytelling that relates to the theme for the month
• Encourage Participation in every learning task, to develop personal skills and independence
• Make sure social interaction takes place by including group activities
• Encourage communication using the method most appropriate for each child e.g. PECS, Makaton
• Ensure facilities are clean, safe and well maintained, as well as having appropriate stationery available, based on child’s needs
• Grooming of learners
• Preparing and looking after learner’s belongings
• Daily toilet routines and complete toileting sheets
• Supervision at snack and lunch time, including seating and assistance if needed.
• Assist with behaviour management/modification
In the Playground:
• Help prepare daily activities in advance of outside time
•Outdoor Resources: It is your responsibility to ensure equipment is looked after, clean, and safe. If you notice that something is broken report it to the therapist.
• Supervision at Outdoor play, ensuring safety always
• Interaction with children on outdoor equipment, encouraging social development and improvement in gross motor skills
• Encourage communication using the method most appropriate for each child e.g. PECS, Makaton


Requirements:
• Trained in the ECD field with a special interest for special needs education and Autism Spectrum Disorder and related condition
• ECD diploma is a prerequisite
• 1 – 2 years’ experience in special needs in Autism and related
• To be fluent in isiXhosa and English
• Drivers license is advantageous
• Needs to have a respectful nature
• Cultural awareness & sensitivity
• Compassionate and understanding
• Able to show empathy
• Have good listening skills
• Able to maintain a professional relationship with parents
• Maintain confidentiality
• Well spoken
